Despite the importance of pattern, specific features can be of great importance within a settlement. Monuments and landmarks, historic buildings, greens,
streets and squares, trees, hedges, gardens and other open spaces in many cases cannot be replaced without a significant loss of character. Such
elements tend to persist in settlements because they continue to be valued and recognised as fundamental to the character of the settlement.(3.2.1)
